Educate a Girl, Empower a Community: Our Climate Mission Begins in Lagos

At GERE Global, we believe the fight for a sustainable planet cannot be won if half of its future leaders are left out of the conversation. That belief brought us to Lagos this season, where we had the joy of empowering 100 female students from Avital College, Surulere and LivingPasture College, Ikorodu, with the knowledge, confidence and tools to become champions of climate awareness and environmental responsibility.

This is the heart of who we are. Girls for Environmental Resilience and Empowerment (GERE) Global exists to make sure that girls are not standing in the shadows of climate action, but leading it.

Why We Start With the Girl Child

For too long, conversations around climate change and community development have centred on boys, while girls were treated as bystanders to change rather than agents of it. We are saying no to that.

When you educate a girl, you do not educate one person. You educate a whole community. The girl who learns today becomes the mother, the leader and the decision maker of tomorrow. As our founder, Dr. Blessing Palmberg, often reminds us, the woman takes care of the family, and the girls are the leaders of tomorrow. Climate change touches every one of us, so every one of us deserves to understand our environment and the part we can play in protecting it.

We also recognise a hard truth. Many girls still face marginalisation and a shortage of real opportunities, told in quiet and not so quiet ways that they do not belong. Through programmes like this, we are rewriting that story. We are equipping girls to rise, to lead and to take their rightful place at the table.

Meet Our New Environmental Ambassadors
A highlight of our visit to Avital College was the inauguration of two outstanding students as Environmental Ambassadors, charged with championing tree planting and environmental care within their school:

Alisa Chuckuwuka (JSS2), joining the leadership from the junior class
Udeme Udofia (SS2), serving as President

We like to think of these ambassadors as whistleblowers for the planet. They will lead the nurturing of the trees planted across their school and inspire their peers to embrace environmental responsibility as a way of life.

Caring for a tree is a lot like raising a child. It needs attention, care and the right resources to grow. We have asked the teachers to stand behind our girls as they take on this responsibility, because in tending these trees, the students are also learning leadership, accountability and service to their community from an early age.

Building Something That Lasts: The GERE Clubs

We are not here for a single event. We are here for lasting impact.

We believe women naturally carry the capacity to nurture, manage and sustain both families and the environment, which makes the girl child a critical stakeholder in climate advocacy. To keep that momentum alive long after our outreach ends, we are establishing GERE Clubs in the schools we visit.

Through these clubs, members will be trained in practical environmental sustainability, including the recycling of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) bottles and other waste management activities that keep our communities clean. Our goal is simple: to instil environmental consciousness in girls and turn that awareness into active participation.

To mark our growing partnership, we proudly issued a Certificate of Partnership to the school and provided educational materials to support the students on their journey.

Lagos Today, the Nation and the World Tomorrow

This is a global mission, and we have chosen Lagos as our flagship location. From here, we are moving into the South-East and beyond, deepening climate awareness among young girls across the country. It is a project that will touch the entire world, and we are honoured to begin it here at home.

Our newly inaugurated ambassadors have already pledged to keep the planted trees thriving and to teach younger ones why environmental sustainability and tree planting matter. That promise is exactly the kind of leadership we set out to inspire.

Join Us

Every tree planted and every girl empowered brings us closer to a more resilient world. If you are a school, a partner or a supporter who shares our vision, we would love to walk this path with you.

Together, we can educate our girls, protect our environment and build the future we all deserve.

GERE Global. Resilience. Empowerment. A Greener Tomorrow.
