7 Everyday Habits That Make You a Climate Champion

You do not need to be a scientist, a president or an adult to protect the planet. Some of the most powerful change in the world starts with a single young person deciding to do something differently today.

At GERE Global, we work with girls who are proving this every single day. So if you have ever wondered what one student can really do about something as big as climate change, this one is for you. Here are seven simple habits you can start right now, at school, at home and in your community.

1. Give Your Plastic Bottles a Second Life

That empty plastic bottle is not rubbish. It is a resource. Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) bottles, the kind most drinks come in, can be collected, cleaned and recycled instead of thrown away. Start a collection point in your classroom or join your GERE Club’s recycling drive. Every bottle you save from the gutter is one less piece of plastic harming your community.

2. Plant a Tree, Then Keep It Alive

Planting a tree is exciting, but the real work is in the caring. A tree is a lot like a baby. It needs attention, water and protection to grow strong. Adopt a tree in your school or compound, water it, watch over it and watch it grow alongside you. Years from now, the shade it gives will be your gift to students who have not even arrived yet.

3. Become the One Who Picks It Up

Litter does not clean itself. When you pick up a wrapper, a can or a bottle and put it where it belongs, you are not just tidying up. You are setting an example. Soon, others notice and follow. A clean community starts with one person who refuses to walk past the mess.

4. Waste Less, Save More

Turn off the tap while you brush. Switch off lights and fans when you leave a room. Take only the food you can finish. These small choices save water, energy and money, and they add up faster than you think. Being mindful is one of the quietest but most powerful climate habits there is.

5. Reuse Before You Throw Away

Before you toss something out, ask one question: can this be used again? An old jar becomes a pencil holder. A worn shirt becomes a cleaning cloth. A used notebook page becomes scrap paper. Reusing what you already have means buying and wasting less, and that is a win for both your pocket and the planet.

6. Talk About It

Knowledge grows when it is shared. Tell your siblings what you learned. Explain to your friends why recycling matters. Encourage your parents to cut down on waste at home. When you speak up, you turn one informed girl into a whole circle of people taking action. This is exactly how change spreads from one classroom to an entire community.

7. Lead, Do Not Wait

You do not need a title to be a leader. You need a decision. Start the club. Organise the clean up. Be the first to raise your hand when your school asks who will care for the garden. The world is not waiting for someone older to fix things. It is waiting for someone like you to begin.

You Are the Change

Climate change can feel like a problem too big for any one person to solve. But here is the truth we have seen again and again: communities change when girls lead, and girls lead when they realise their actions matter.

So pick one habit from this list and start today. Then add another next week. Before long, you will not just be a student who cares about the environment. You will be a climate champion that your community looks up to.

And that is exactly who we believe you were always meant to be.
